ISAF Press Briefing September 19, 2011

ISAF Headquarters Public Affairs

KABUL, Afghanistan (Sept. 19, 2011) – The International Security Assistance Force spokesperson, German Brigadier General Carsten Jacobson, expressed ISAF’s condolences to the families and friends of the Afghans who lost their lives during the insurgent attack Sept. 12-13.

“I want to send our tho August 2ughts and prayers to the families and friends of those killed and injured during this recent attack on Kabul,” Jacobson said.

While the aggressive attacks were an attempt by insurgents to disrupt the recently begun transition of responsibility to the Afghan National Security Forces, the partnership remains strong between ISAF and Afghan people.

“Transition will continue. ISAF and the Afghan people will not let incidents such as the one this past week derail the momentum,” Jacobson said.

The rapid response of the ANSF actually showed their ability to step up and take the lead in protecting the Afghan people.

“This Afghan force was able to contain the enemy action and prevent any escalation of the incident,” said Jacobson. “The entire operation was Afghan led with ISAF in support.”

In addition to the Afghan ground forces, the Afghan Air Force responded to the attacks, efficiently supporting the ground troops using their attack helicopters.

On the ground and in the air, the ANSF showed a remarkable ability to thwart the insurgent attackers.

“In three locations, the Afghan National Police did not allow suicide bombers freedom of movement,” said Jacobson.

One policeman sacrificed his life by holding the suicide bomber to his body. This allowed the remaining security forces to empty the surrounding areas of traffic and cordon the area off to save the lives of numerous civilians.

“This brave young man, Abdul Same, was awarded the Afghan Bravery Medal by President Karzai,” Jacobson said. “He was a true Afghan hero.”

While Same and other Afghan heroes like him were working protecting the Afghan people, the terrorists were doing quite the opposite.

“The Taliban continue to show their complete and utter disregard and lack of respect for the lives of the Afghan people,” said Jacobson.

In spite of these ruthless attacks, the will of the Afghan people is strong

“It is the people and the Afghan security forces,” Jacobson said, “that have shown the insurgents they will not be oppressed by their gutless and murderous tactics.”
