QALAT, Afghanistan (Jan. 2, 2013) - In yet another sign of progress for women in Zabul province, the Zabul director of Women’s Affairs hosted a career fair with hopes of filling key vacancies for women throughout the provincial government directorates in Qalat, Afghanistan, Dec. 30.
More than 30 women attended the fair, which was part of the province’s female recruitment campaign to mobilize and improve women's participation in socioeconomic affairs. The women attending, mostly young high school graduates, heard speeches and information concerning the positions open.
This fair was important for everyone, including Sadiqa Jalali, the Zabul director of Women’s Affairs.
“We currently don’t have any women working for the provincial government,” said Jalali. “The main purpose of this event is to encourage these young women to come and work.”
The positions available include a journalist to write articles and take photos of women’s events, a position in the health department, a project manager position to manage projects for the betterment of women and a deputy director of women’s affairs for the province, among others.
Dr. Amin Rafiullah, an adviser to the Zabul provincial governor, explained the necessity for recruiting more women to work in the government.
“We need females to work throughout the different directorates in the provincial government,” said Rafiullah. “If you don’t have females contributing to the society and the economy, then that society and economy is doomed to never succeed. Women in government here is an important step.”
As further incentive for local women to pursue positions within the directorates, applicants, on a one time basis, will be able to take the qualification exam in Zabul, eliminating the need for the women to travel to Kabul.
“We are doing everything to encourage these young females to apply for these positions,” said Rafiullah.
